Rustic Garden Design Testimonial – ‘After having various ideas swirling around my head I contacted Jill who, with her expertise, was able to do a cohesive plan for my garden and fit in all the things I wanted.

She was very patient and knowledgeable about design and planting and it was great fun to sit with her and go through everything.

After the plan was finalised Steve and his team came to do the build, they were reliable and hard working, and a pleasure to have around.

I always get a “wow” when people see the garden, and I could not be happier.  I would thoroughly recommend Jill if you want a fantastic garden transformation!’

As an avid gardener the client asked for a garden that was rustic, cottage style with a natural, wild feel that would be  a haven for wildlife.  Also a vegetable garden was added to the wish list.  Natural sandstone with varied colour and texture was used along with gravel areas and natural boulders to give a blended, relaxed, informal unity to the garden.  A roofed rustic garden shelter was constructed using green oak to give the client an informal seating area by the pond.   Rusty metal arches were added to provide focal points and accentuate views adding to the rustic feel.

In particular the existing pond was home to newts so the construction of the new pond would need to fit with the newts breeding  patterns.   The old pond was deconstructed once the newts had migrated and the new pond constructed in time for their return.  The newts embraced their new home and continue to live happily along with lots of other pond life.

The planting was a mix of perennials and grasses to give a cottagey, wild feel to the borders with a mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs for structure.  A hedge surrounded the garden to allow ground dwelling wildlife to leave and enter  to benefit from the pond and insect life attracted by the plants.

Mediterranean Garden Design Malmesbury, Wiltshire

Mediterranean Garden Design Malmesbury, Wiltshire – Isabelle and Mario asked for a Mediterranean garden design that reflected their home country.  The garden was designed to blend informal Mediterranean style with a relaxed country garden providing a space that combined the best of both styles.   Textured natural sandstone for the paving and edging combined with golden flint gravel to give subtle colour tone and subtle variety of texture to the space.   A simple bubbling water feature adds a focal point, movement and sound along with providing water for birds and other wildlife.  The planting combines a gravel garden planted with Phormium’s, grasses, Hebe’s and Lavender with a central Olive tree with lush herbaceous borders.  the borders are punctuated with the structure of  Italian Cypress trees, surrounding a lawn with and area for wildlife at the top of the garden using a wildflower meadow and native trees.

Hi Jill

As promised our testimonial…..

A big thank you to you Jill, Steve and the team.  What a wonderful change to our garden!  The design Jill came up with was amazing and we thought it would be difficult to achieve but we were proved wrong  by Steve and the team!  They worked in the blazing heat everyday and through the rain and were very professional and ready to listen to our views.  Now we have a garden which all our family and friends love and we look forward to the coming years to see it mature into the garden we always dreamed of!

Thank you Jill for your professionalism, insight and care you’ve taken in producing the design.

Isabelle and Mario

Testimonial For Garden Designed By Jill Blackwood

Jill, I did indeed want to say that we were absolutely delighted with the work you and your colleagues did for us. It looks wonderful – better than I had ever hoped it would look. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the team to anyone. Needless to say the ducks are very happy with their new pond and we have all spent hours watching them swim around. I would be happy to provided a reference if any of your customers want to ask us about the work. – Ros Elmes

3 years later …….. Jill, I wanted to let you know that we (and the ducks) still love the work you did in our garden. Ros

Natural Water Feature Swindon, Wiltshire – RHS Medal

Natural Water feature for wildlife – In 2006 Swindon Garden Designer Jill Blackwood created ‘A Bonnie Burn’ wildlife garden for the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) Malvern Spring Gardening Show.  The wildlife garden was designed by Jill to illustrate the importance of encouraging and nurturing our native wildlife through wildlife gardening. The natural water feature was constructed by Big Fish Landscapes Ltd and included a natural stone waterfall and a gentle stream constructed using glacial boulders nestled in an undulating wildflower meadow. Native trees and shrubs surrounded the water feature, and the garden even included a stumpery. The wildlife garden design was featured on BBCs Gardeners World Programme

As the plight of our wildlife continues and the numbers of bees, butterflies and other insects dwindling, we are all becoming increasingly aware of our impact on the environment. Thankfully many of us are starting to look for ways to improve matters. Creating a wildlife garden is essential. Jill felt and continues to feel that we could all ‘do our bit’ and that any garden can include some or all of the key elements that will help to create a sanctuary for our wildlife. Any garden can include an area of native wildflowers which will provide a ‘nectar bar’ for bees and other insects to feed on. A water feature, however small, can provide water for animal such as hedgehogs and a huge variety of insect and birds to drink. If you have room, a larger water feature such as a pond can provide a habitat for pond dwellers like toads and frogs.

Take a look through Jill’s portfolio to see the gardens and water features she has created along with the testimonials from delighted clients.

Traditional Garden Design Oxfordshire

Garden Design Faringdon testimonial – When we moved into our Faringdon house our garden appeared to have been neglected for over a decade. Jill and her team transformed it rapidly into a very special space.

We brought with us several items of garden statuary which Jill integrated exceptionally well and included the creation of a Japanese  section.

Her selection of planting not only gives us throughout year interest but panders to our love of special plants especialy roses.. We had a large collection of hostas and acers which we brought with us and Jill also skillfully and seamlessly integrated these into her designs. Altogether a great outcome about which we are very pleased indeed. We highly recommend her and her team.

As avid gardeners the clients wanted a traditional garden style with an abundance of planting.  We removed a large pond by the house and made a raised patio area from which the garden could be viewed.   Buff natural sandstone was used to blend with the house.  the clients had downsized their outside space and wanted a design the accommodated their collection of statuary and also their love of Japanese sculpture and planting.  The main area was designed in traditional country style where traditional English statues could be placed.  Raised beds in front of the patio with adjoining borders were packed with a variety of shrubs and perennials in traditional country style.   A path led to a large lawn area  surrounded by lush borders with a central focal point.  A path led to a smaller area where the Japanese influence could be diplayed with a circular patio over which a Dragon Pergola was placed.  The client’s collection of Japanese acers and statuary surrounded the seating area.

Garden Design Faringdon, Oxfordshire, by Jill Blackwood

Garden design Faringdon Oxfordshire – The clients wanted a country style garden design that included a good size patio area for entertaining.  The client had inherited four statues representing spring, summer, autumn and winter and these were placed around a circular path which led from the patio to a large lawn area.  The central focal point was a bird bath water feature that matched the colour tone of the statues and gave the space the soothing and cooling sound of flowing water.  To one side a summerhouse was placed to give a sheltered seating spot to sit and enjoy the garden quietly.  Borders surrounded the circle planted with a mix of perennials and shrubs to soften the hard landscaping and enhance the country feel.  Raised planters flanking the main patio along with the existing tree added height in the planting.  A low fence and native country hedge was added on the boundary to the adjoining field to allow the wonderful view to be kept whilst also giving a feeling of enclosure to the space.  The purple and blues of the flowers blended with the natural slate chippings and both added a contrast with the buff paving and the Cotswold stone of the surrounding buildings.

Garden Design Swindon, Wiltshire – Testimonial

Garden Design Swindon Wiltshire – We would like to say how delighted we are with the transformation of our garden which you and your team have achieved over the last six months. We started with a blank canvas in a lovely location, and your design closely followed our brief for a natural country garden blending in with the rural surroundings. The result has exceeded our expectations, and we are now enjoying being in our garden and watching it slowly grow and bloom into the spring. Your landscaping team were highly competent, friendly and helpful, adapting the design to overcome problems posed by the site – and they braved the foulest of weather to get the job completed on schedule. We are particularly pleased with Wayne’s water feature which interprets your natural stream design perfectly. We would heartily recommend you to anyone wanting a lovely garden, but not knowing where to start. We are even planning to open our garden centre this summer, joining other local gardens in a local charity scheme, as being next to as popular country walking route, people from the village regularly pass by and complement our garden, and we are sure they would like a closer look! Thanks once again to you and Rob, Steve and Wayne for a great job.

Wildlife Garden Design

The client wanted wildlife garden design that included a natural meandering stream.  The stream was constructed using Glacial boulders shipped in from Scotland.  Glacial boulders have a smooth finish and Scottish pebbles and cobbles were added.  The stream was nestled in a wildflower meadow.  Ray sent me photos of the meadows progress through the seasons from small fresh green growth into a fully flowering meadow buzzing with insects.  Around the meadow naturalistic planting gave additional interest and native trees added to the natural feel.  A step stone path meandered through the meadow and a rustic bench was placed to view the garden and the visiting wildlife.

Jill, I am very pleased with the total transformation of what was a mud patch full of weeds into something of beauty.  The team have worked hard to create a wonderful space.  It is now pretty much what I had in my mind when we first discussed the project but the reality is more pleasing than I anticipated.  I am now looking forward to seeing the planting when it has had time to establish and develop.  It is already a place of joy and relaxation instead of the headache it was before.  I promise I will look after it and may contact you in the future for some advice.

Best regards Ray

Country Garden Design Marlborough, Wiltshire

Country Garden Design Marlborough – The client wanted a country garden in traditional style that fitted with the large house and surrounding countryside.  Walling and steps were constructed using red brick to match with the house to bring unity.  Textural Fossil buff sandstone paving and coping was blended with flint gravel to provide a subtle contrast to the brick and help lighten the space.  The planting was soft coloured and traditional country garden style to compliment and soften the hard landscaping and the house.

I am so glad you were able to pop over and see the garden in all its glory.  When Steve and Wayne left us in December (after some of the most abysmal weather ever), it was hard to imagine how the garden would look in the summer.  Well, now you’ve seen it and I am sure you must be as pleased as we are; it is a stunning transformation. The pleasure we get from sitting and looking at the garden is immeasurable. You listened carefully and asked lots of questions, which I really appreciated because it has meant that we got the garden we wanted.

Thank you Jill, for all your hard work and excellent communication. You have made this such a pleasant process. Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to Steve and Wayne who always turned up on time in terrible weather conditions and managed to stay cheerful and hardworking throughout.

The quality of their work is excellent and I would have no delay in thoroughly recommending their work.
